As most players were fairly good-sized fellows, I used to wait for some of the older Pirates and go into the park with them. However, one day the other men got in ahead of me, and I boldly approached the player’s gate with my uniform roll tucked under my arm. The man stopped me and asked: “Whose uniform are you carrying?”

I told him it was my own. That annoyed him and he said: “Just for being a fresh kid, I won’t let you in, and you can stay there until the owner of the uniform comes out for it.”
